Naidu is an important person in Indian politics, with a big influence on both state and national government.

Early Life and Political Beginnings

Chandrababu Naidu grew up in a farming family in a small village near Tirupati, in the southeastern part of Andhra Pradesh. His interest in politics started when he was a student at Sri Venkateswara University in Tirupati, where he finished his bachelor’s degree in 1972.

Naidu first joined the Indian National Congress (INC), and during the emergency period under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, he became the youth president of the party in his area from 1975 to 1977. However, he soon realized that his future was in politics, not studies, and decided to focus on a full-time career in politics.

Rise Through the Ranks of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP)

In 1978, Naidu joined the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly as a member of the Indian National Congress. Early in his political career, he served as a state minister from 1980 to 1983. In 1983, Naidu lost his seat in the assembly as the TDP won the state elections. Afterward, Naidu joined the TDP and quickly earned the trust of NTR. Over the next few years, he became an important figure in the party. When NTR faced challenges in leadership, Naidu helped stabilize the party and support NTR’s position. By 1985, Naidu was made the general secretary of TDP and played a key role in making the party stronger.

Political Leadership and Becoming Chief Minister

Naidu’s political skills became clear in 1995 when he took control of the TDP in an internal conflict with his father-in-law, NTR. With NTR’s second wife gaining more power, Naidu became the leader of the TDP and the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. His leadership started a period of major changes in the state, focusing on technology, building infrastructure, and economic growth.

During Naidu’s time as leader, Andhra Pradesh became a center for information technology (IT), and the city of Hyderabad grew into one of India’s top IT hubs. His efforts to modernize the state and improve infrastructure also brought him national recognition.

National Political Influence and Setbacks

Naidu’s influence went beyond Andhra Pradesh. In the 1999 general elections, the TDP performed well, winning 29 seats in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India’s parliament. Naidu teamed up with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to form a national government. His strong leadership made people see him as a possible future Prime Minister.

However, some of Naidu’s reforms were not popular, especially with farmers and poor people, who felt left out of the benefits of his policies. In 2004, the TDP faced a big loss in both state and national elections, and Naidu stepped down as Chief Minister.

A Comeback to Power

After the loss in 2004, Naidu became part of the opposition but stayed an important figure in Andhra Pradesh politics. In the 2009 elections, his attempt to build a strong alliance with other regional parties did not succeed, and the TDP struggled to regain power.

However, in 2014, Naidu made an impressive comeback when the TDP joined the BJP again and won enough seats to form a government in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly. After Telangana was created, Naidu became the Chief Minister again.

Even though the TDP did not do well in the 2019 elections, Naidu’s influence in politics remained strong. In 2024, he made a strong comeback by winning the state elections and became the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh once more. His return showed his continued importance as a leader in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

Legacy and Political Role

Chandrababu Naidu is known for his goal of making Andhra Pradesh a developed and successful state, focusing on improving the economy, building better infrastructure, and promoting technology.

His way of leading is often like a business leader, with a strong focus on good governance and efficient management. Although he has faced criticism for not helping some groups of people, Naidu’s political impact still shapes the future of Andhra Pradesh and its role in national politics.

Naidu’s journey shows his ability to adapt, his political skills, and his strength to recover after challenges. As the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, his influence remains strong, and his important position in the National Democratic Alliance makes him a key player in Indian politics.
